Jean-Philippe Audin

Jean-Philippe Audin studied the cello with André Navarra and Maurice Gendron at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and studied composition with Franco Donatoni and Giuseppe Sinopoli at the Chigiana Musical Academy of Siena. After his first place win at the CNSM de Paris, he continued his postgraduate studies in chamber music with his partner Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Jean-Philippe Audin was named principal soloist of the Orchestre de l’Opera de Lyon, a position that he quickly left to pursue his exploration of contemporary music. His rich, varied, and international career has taken him throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Chili, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore, and has premiered several contemporary solo pieces by composers such as Lenot, Dutilleux, Mefano, Berio, and Sheller. As the co-founder of the Actuels quartet, he has premiered pieces by Lalo Shiffrin, Jean-Claude Petit, Pierre Schaeffer, and Bruno Coulais. Audin has also been a member of Pandemonium with François Jeanneau, Katia Labèque, Didier Lockwood, J.F. Jenny-Clark, Mino Cinelu, of String Swing System (D. Levallet), and of Martial Solal’s Big Band.
Jean-Philippe Audin has also performed the entirety of Bach’s Suites for solo cello on numerous occasions. He has also developed Videocello, a cello allowing him to play images in real time with his playing; he makes an appearance with said instrument in the multimedia group MOVIESONIC that he founded in 2007 with Jérôme Badini, electrosax, a fusion of electrojazz, classical music, and video-art installations. In 2008, he collaborated with David Lynch to rewrite and direct the first concert version of the music of the American series Twin Peaks, which was performed at the Cannes Film Festival.
Audin co-starred with Diego Modena in the duet OCARINA (several million albums sold worldwide). He was the partner of Roland Romanelli and Rebecca Mai in the show Barbara et l’Homme en Habit Rouge directed by Eric Emmanuel Schmitt and performed at the Théâtre Rive Gauche from January to December 2016. In 2017 he participated in Lenny Kratvitz’s new album as well as an album by and with Lalo Shiffrin, produced by Jean-Michel Bernard, composed by Michel Gondry. He has written arrangements for Iggy Pop, Johnny Depp, Larusso, Kristel Adams, Yaël Naïm, Passi, Stefan Eicher, Paul Personne, Tinu Heiniger, and Christophe Maé. As a composer and arranger-orchestrator, Jean-Philippe Audin has written for film, theater, and concerts.
After having performed as a soloist for film soundtracks by Georges Delerue, Lalo Shifrin, and John Barry, he became a collaborator and soloist for numerous film score composers, such as Jean-Michel Bernard, Bruno Coulais, Eric Serra, Nathaniel Méchaly, Krishna Lévy, Alexandre Desplat, Gabriel Yared, Nicolas Errera, Bruno Fontaine, Evgueny et Sacha Galpérine, Patrice Peyreras, Michel Legrand and Arnaud Rebotini, who won the César Award in 2018 for Best Film Score for his film "120 Battements". Audin is also the official arranger/orchestrator for the festival "Un Violon sur le Sable", in which he has participated for over 30 years and has been an artistic director for the past several years.
